Company History
Newly qualified as a machinist and maintenance mechanic, Mr. Denys Duchesne left his hometown and worked for seven years in the industrial sector in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. During this period, he gained solid experience in the pulp and paper industry, aluminum smelters and ship maintenance. A hard-working and committed employee, he was quickly noticed by his bosses for his leadership qualities and ingenuity, but over time, he began to feel the desire to return to his hometown. Following a market study that demonstrated the need for machining and welding services, he seized the opportunity and decided to return to La Tuque to start his own business.
1993
The company is founded in modest rented premises measuring 2,500 square feet, with offices set up in a construction site trailer. The services offered at the time are conventional machining, specialized welding and on-site mechanics for customers in the sawmill, pulp and paper, forestry and railway industries in the town of La Tuque.
1997
To meet the growing demand for its products and services and to improve the efficiency of its operations, the company acquires a 17,200-square-foot building and relocated there.
With the installation of a 15-tonne capacity overhead crane and a numerically controlled cutting table, Pro-Mec Élite adds steel plate cutting and large-scale steel structure and metal fabrication welding to its services. The company is now targeting new markets outside the region.
2008
ISO 9001:2008 accreditation to serve a larger clientele in the construction industry and meet the requirements of large-scale project specifications throughout the province.
2009
Pro-Mec Élite invests over a million dollars in acquiring a fully automatic profile drilling line, commonly known as a ‘drill line’. This significantly increases the plant’s production capacity, enabling it to offer subcontracting services to major steel structure manufacturers for large-scale projects across Canada and the United States.
Following this investment, the company secures its largest contract since it began operations, namely to manufacture infrastructure for the New Highway 30 in Beauharnois, a contract that will last three years.
2011
The company obtains W47.1 Division 1 accreditation from the Canadian Welding Bureau, allowing it to distinguish itself, expand its field of activity, and work directly on infrastructure projects for the Ministère du Transport du Québec (MTQ).
2012 - 2017
Subsequently, the company’s growth continues to soar with the awarding of several major contracts: manufacturing for the dismantling of the old Champlain Bridge in Montreal, lighting for the Jacques Cartier Bridge, which included 10,000 steel assemblies, manufacturing of parts for the new Champlain Bridge, footbridges for the repair of the Pierre Laporte Bridge in Quebec City, and more.
2018
The company hired its first foreign worker from Brazil in December 2018. Since then, thirteen other workers from Brazil, Colombia, Brittany, Switzerland, and France have joined the team. Pro-Mec Élite now has more than 35 members in total on its team and is very proud of this.
2019 to 2022
Over C$7.5 million is invested to expand the factory, acquire management software and specialized production equipment, and install digitally controlled production lines. The goal is to boost the production of steel structures for bridges and commercial buildings. These investments lead to two major contracts in 2022: the manufacture of steel structures for two Réseau express métropolitain (REM) stations, and the manufacture of parts for the deck of the Laviolette Bridge in Trois-Rivières.
2023
The shareholders of Pro-Mec Élite Inc. acquire a Trois-Rivières-based company, Groupe Support Plus – Labmétal (2017) Inc. This partnership will enable Pro-Mec Élite Inc. to add another string to its bow, namely specialization in the manufacture of aluminum and stainless-steel parts.
July 2023
The company officially announces the appointment of its next generation of leaders. Six enthusiastic individuals, who are already working within the company, choose to become an integral part of the organization. They will help it to prosper by adapting to new technological challenges and ensuring its long-term viability.
The company is selected to manufacture various structures for the Pont des Piles bridge in La Mauricie — a wonderful opportunity to raise our profile in our own region.
